Brooke House, Town Square, Basildon
Basildon is unique among New Towns, and rare among any conurbation, in having a large block of flats right in the central shopping area. The fourteen-storey, 84-dwelling tower has two distinctive features - (1) eight 27-foot V-shaped reinforced concrete struts, and (2) shallowly canted windows allowing more light (Image]). The listing gives the architect as Basildon Development Corporation's chief architect, Anthony Davies, with Basil Spence as consultant, and Ove Arup and Partners as structural engineers. Grade II listed.
