Community Policing Southend-on-Sea
I am not sure if this car park by Hamlet Court Rd counts as being in Prittlewell or Westcliff however today volunteers and community officers of the Essex (& Southend-on-Sea ) Constabulary were undertaking a crime prevention scheme issuing free UV security marker pens. From 1914 until 1969 the Borough of Southend-on-Sea had an independent police force.. I remember as a child seeing the Sergeants wearing white helmets. Five years after the merger with Essex Police the “and Southend-on-Sea" was dropped from the official title of the force. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Southend-on-Sea_Borough_Police

The part of Westcliff to the north of the C2C station comprises large semi-detached Victorian and Edwardian villas set in a grid of wide streets. Virtually all are now in multi-occupation.

Osborne Road, Westcliff-on-Sea
Osborne Road is one of a number of Victorian terraced streets that lie in the triangle defined by London Road, West Road and Victoria Avenue. The homely nature of this area became somewhat changed with the construction of the nearby Balmoral Complex and its three tower blocks in 1971.

Grampian is one of three tower blocks comprising the Balmoral Complex completed in 1971. Its eastern side faces Salisbury Avenue from which this shot was taken. The other blocks are Blackdown and Brecon. The estate stands on the site of Campbell Road, Eastwick Road and Newlands Road all of whose terraced houses were demolished for the purpose.

Hamlet Court Road, Westcliff-on-Sea
Hamlet Court Road was known in the earlier part of the C20 as The Bond Street of the East Coast so up-market were its shops and restaurants.

'The Bond Street of the East Coast'
This was how Hamlet Court Road, Westcliff (seen here) was known in the earlier part of the C20. When the photograph was taken the only evidence of the street's illustrious past was Havens, a department store which had specialised in domestic glassware and ceramics since its foundation in 1901. But this too was closed, in 2017.
