Hylton Castle
This medieval gatehouse/tower stands in Hylton Dene. In the 11th Century, Hylton Castle was a fortified manor house, built by Henry Hilton. In the late 14th Century, Sir William Hilton built the original stone castle, adding the gatehouse and a nearby chapel. During the 18th Century, Baron John Hilton redesigned the gatehouse, adding two crenellated wings. Finally, a century later, William Briggs demolished the wings, leaving the castle gatehouse as it's seen today.
