A 19th century 0-6-0T shunter built in 1949 stands outside Sunderland South Dock Locomotive Depot
This is one of 'modern' J72 0-6-0T's referred to in Image], parked next to an ex-WD J94 0-6-0T outside the major Sunderland South Dock Depot, which in 1954 was coded 54A in the NE Region and had an allocation of 53 locomotives, comprising:- 1 2-6-0 (BR), 20 0-6-0, 6 4-6-2T, 3 0-6-2T, 11 0-6-0T (6 ex-WD) and 12 0-4-4T.

Sunderland South Dock loco shed
The old steam shed at Sunderland South Dock was still in use in the 1980s for the many diesel locomotive that worked the coal trains in the County Durham coal field.A line up of motive power is seen here at the weekend when very little coal moved. The shed has been demolished and closed as the work went as the mines closed.

Sunderland (Town Moor) railway station (site), Tyne & Wear
Opened in 1836 by the Durham and Sunderland Railway, later part of the North Eastern Railway, this single-storey station closed in 1858 and was later demolished. The plaque is affixed to a nearby wall,and reads "TOWN MOOR RAILWAY STATION. Site of Sunderland's first railway passenger station in 1836 until becoming a major supply route serving the south dock coal staithes in 1859". See also Image
