New Forest Ponies near Frogham
There are no longer any truly wild ponies left in Britain. There are ponies living in a semi-wild state. The population of ponies found in the New Forest have been 'improved' from time to time by cross-breeding, particularly with Arab stock. The 'wild' ponies are generally stock, sturdy beasts, often with shaggy coats in order to withstand the bleak winters they encounter on the heaths where they live. However tame the animals may appear to be they still retain some wild characteristics, and feeding them will often have the added risk of exposing them to fast-moving cars, when they start coming to the roads to seek out humans to feed them.

Margins of the New Forest, near Frogham
Down in the dip a line of furze marks the course of a small stream. Distant pale specks on the high ground to the right of the picture are grey ponies, grazing on the slope below Abbott's Well car park. Here and there the bracken is beginning to turn brown - the shot was taken a couple of days before the autumn equinox.
