Ludgershall Castle: defensive banks and ditch (2)
The castle ruins (glimpsed between the trees on the right) are surrounded by a complex of banks and ditches - all made necessary by the low-lying situation, lacking natural defensive features. The banks are well overgrown, but (by mowing) a path is kept open along this ditch to the south-east of the ruins. In early June the air was heavy with the peppery pollen of cow parsley.
