The White Lion Inn at Wherwell - end elevation, showing 'header bond'
Looking at the end-wall of the pub I noticed something odd about the brickwork: all the bricks (with very few exceptions) are laid so that their ends are exposed - a method of brick-laying known as 'header bond'. As far as I could make out, header bond was used for the whole pub, as originally built, though not for certain repairs.

Since I last photographed this pub it has acquired a new sign board and has lost its covering of ivy. An older image can be seen here http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1017346

The White Lion Inn at Wherwell
A red-brick building with a tiled roof, in a village where thatch and timber frames predominate. Earlier images show the south-eastern end of the pub overgrown with ivy (or was it Virginia creeper?): http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/90337
A closer look at the White Lion shows a rather unusual style of brick-laying, header bond, where all the bricks are laid so that their ends are visible http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/2527369.
