Longparish station
Opened in 1885 this station was built to one of the standard designs of the time of the London & South Western Railway: compare it with that at Worplesdon Image It was on the line from Hurstbourne Junction to Fullerton Junction which was built to carry north-south traffic in competition with the Didcot, Newbury & Southampton line which was backed by the rival Great Western Railway. It soon became obvious that the line was a white elephant. Passenger services ceased in 1931 and the track north of Longparish was lifted, although goods trains continued to serve Longparish until 1956. The station is now a private house.

A303 near Forton
This is the A303 London to Exeter main road seen from the B3048 flyover near Forton. Apart from the dualling of the road, much has changed here in recent years. The flyover replaced a railway bridge which crossed the road here. The petrol station took the place of a roadside inn. An industrial estate hidden behind the trees on the left replaced railway sidings that served a large wartime ammunition depot.
