Burlesdon - A Windmill Reflected
Here Burlesdon windmill is reflected in the newly restored pond which is a haven for wildlife.
Bursledon Windmill was built in 1814, replacing an earlier tower mill which was built in 1766. The machinery of the earlier mill was incorporated into the new mill. The mill remained in use until 1880s after which it fell into disuse and decay. Between 1978 and 1991, the mill was restored by the Hampshire Buildings Preservation Trust, and the mill opened to the public in May 1991.

Bursledon Windmill - grinding slow but exceedingly fine
In reality not grinding at all. There was little wind and although a fair amount of sail was set the mill would only move with a push. In this shot the wallower and mainshaft are blurred as it was turning.

Windmill at Bursledon
There are three types of windmill (smock, post and tower). This is a nineteenth century tower mill just off Windmill Lane, Bursledon. The loop of rope and the large wheel at the top of the mill are used to rotate its timber built cap and the sails so that they can best catch the wind.

Bursledon Windmill
Built in 1813-14 on the site of a previous post-mill. This Grade II* listed building is an example of an early tower mill. There are 5 storeys and the main structure is a circular tapering brick tower. The interior was restored between 1977-91 and contains a full set of timber machinery. Because of shielding to the west (houses) and east (trees) the mill now only operates when winds blow from the north or south.
