Sign for the Flower Pots Inn, Cheriton
This particular name came into being in the seventeenth century, having earlier placed the emphasis on the flower rather than the pot. These were always lilies the emblem of the Virgin Mary. The Puritan dislike of saints and their symbols meant that adaptations had to be made to the signs. Flower Pot signs have a more respectable origin than might at first be thought, but it is well concealed.
