Garnier Road, St Cross
This is a shady section of Garnier Road, with the old sewage pumping station to the right. The road cuts across the Itchen valley to the south of Winchester and the traffic is "calmed" by several old and more recently added pinch points.

Former pumping station, Garnier Road, Winchester
By James Lemon, City Engineer, 1878-80, and extended by Walter Anderson in 1904. The latter must be the jolly stripy section nearer the camera. Converted to offices in 2002 and occupied at the time by Remarkable Group, a PR company.

The Pump House, Garnier Road
A former sewage pumping station converted to offices around 2007. Prior to this conversion, the tarmac area behind the station was used as a household waste recycling station.

Wheel outside the old Pumping Station, Garnier Road, Winchester
This old wheel stands outside the sewage pumping station on Garnier Road, in the Itchen water meadows valley. The pumping station was constructed in the late 1800s to raise sewage to be treated at the works on St Catherine's Hill. Up until March 1975 the station used household refuse as a fuel to power two steam engines. The Pumping Station building (to the right of this wheel) is no longer in use and there are proposals to convert it into a "workspace for creative industries".

House on Garnier Road
This is a major rat-run to the south of Winchester, so it was a rare event to get a photo with no traffic. The house is a former mill on one of the braided streams of the river Itchen, which flows underneath the narrow part of the road.
