West door, St Mary's Church, Marlborough
This beautiful Norman doorway thankfully survived the depredations of war and fire over the centuries and the door itself has not been defaced by the tendencies of some folk in charge of old churches to pin notices to them http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/362339 For more about the church see below...

I'm not sure that this adds anything to Brian's photo at

Parish church [2]
Possibly built on the site of an older church, St Mary's was founded in 1160. The beautiful Norman doorway in the west tower remains but the rest of the church was almost completely destroyed by fire in 1653 and rebuilt. Listed, grade I, with details at: https://www.historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1034302
Marlborough is a market town on the Old Bath Road once the main road from London to Bath. The twice-weekly market is sited in High Street, one of the widest in England, lined on both sides with fine listed buildings of which the town has almost 300. There is evidence of local settlement from every period from the prehistoric to the present day. The town is home to the renowned Marlborough College. The River Kennet flows through the town.
