River Kennet, Hillier?s Yard, Marlborough
At right is the Mustard Seed Book and Coffee Shop. Just beneath the seating area in the wall by the river is a penstock valve. This allows water from road gullies draining the roadway to flow into the river but closes automatically to prevent water from the river back up into the drainage system. Beyond on the right is a branch of Waitrose.

Sluice-gate, River Kennet, Marlborough
This is one of two small sluice-gates that relieve pressure on the main river by allowing water to flow into a small flood storage area. At present the river is running full as a result of rainfall associated with a series of Atlantic depressions that have swept across the country in recent weeks.

This is another of the sluice-gates on the southern bank of the river. It has been opened to relieve pressure on the main flow and allows excess water to run into a small flood storage area nearby.
