Sussex Square, Walcot East, Swindon (4 of 7)
Sussex Square opened in the late 1950s as a mix of residential accommodation and retail outlets including a newsagent, two grocers, a greengrocer and a fish and chip shop. There was also a 'Common Room' (a community hall) with a branch lending library. I seem to recall that there was also a launderette. The square has had its day and is scheduled to be demolished and redeveloped. More below...

The Co-op seen here on the right is probably the only retailer that has been here from the beginning. The CCTV is rather more recent. The device fitted to the CCTV pole is designed to stop rats climbing it and attacking the camera. More below...

Police checkpoint, Queens Drive, Swindon (1)
Out of shot to the left was an unmarked Transit that unmistakably was a camera van, probably containing number plate recognition equipment. It appears to be a joint operation with another agency since the two officials stood by the Renault Clio were wearing unmarked high-visibility jackets.

Police checkpoint, Queens Drive, Swindon (2)
A closer look at the police checkpoint. A policeman is speaking to the passenger in the Renault while two, probably non-Police, officials stand by. I don't normally block out number plates but I have in this case since I don't want to be accused of interfering with the due process of the law.

Police checkpoint, Queens Drive, Swindon (3)
The checkpoint had been set up in the bus lane. The image was obtained shortly after midday and the group of young people to the right of the image are from a nearby tertiary college. I don't normally block out number plates but I have in this case since I don't want to be accused of interfering with the due process of the law.
