Emperor Dragonfly, Plaum's Pit, Cheney Manor, Swindon
This lovely creature was flying around most of the time only stopping briefly at various places. In flight it looks like a miniature helicopter.

Carp (?), Plaum's Pit, Cheney Manor, Swindon
One of several large carp, or perhaps tench, that live in the pond. This one is well over a foot (30cm) long. The white specks on the water are from willow trees.

Plaum's Pit, Cheney Manor, Swindon
This large pond is a well-used facility for anglers. However, it is also an unofficial nature reserve with a varied population of water birds including moorhens, coots, swans and ducks. Also to be seen are dragonflies and damselflies. The pond is tucked away between an industrial estate, houses and allotments. I should know how it came by its name but I don't I'm afraid. It may well once have been a brickworks, or at least a claypit.

Young coot, Plaum's Pit, Cheney Manor, Swindon
I hadn't seen a coot chick before. This is one of three I saw with their parents. I expect its mother loves it.

Coots, Plaum's Pit, Cheney Manor, Swindon
Feeding time. I'm not sure what it is the parents have provided; it looks like a dead fish. Whatever it was the youngsters seemed to like it.

Azure Damselfly, Plaum's Pit, Cheney Manor, Swindon
Told from the Common Blue Damselfly by the rugby-post shaped mark near the wing base. Damselflies hold their wing along their body at rest or out to about 45 degrees, dragonflies hold their wings at 90 degrees to their body. See http://british-dragonflies.org.uk/
