The ground floor window arcades are a particular feature of the building. It includes the former no.7 and no.8 shops, built c.1870-80, Listed Grade II with separate listings for each shop. This view is mainly of no.7 shop.

A mysterious mark, London Street, Swindon
According to the 1900 Ordnance Survey map there is a bench mark at 327.8 feet above 'the assumed Mean Level of the Sea at Liverpool which is 0.650 of a Foot below the general Mean Level of the Sea' at this location. However, this doesn't look like any other bench mark I've seen and is more likely to be a mason's mark. It can be seen in context here Image

London Street, Swindon
The possible cut mark (or bench mark) seen close up here Image is visible just this side of the doorway in the first course of the stonework beneath the cill. The building is part of what was once the Great Western Railway's main factory established by I K Brunel in the mid 19th century. I think this was the carriage and wagon works.
