For a new cause
This distinctive church along The Causeway is now a music and arts centre. The original building was the mid nineteenth century Methodist church, in Gothic style with Art Nouveau influences. It is a Grade II listed structure and forms part of the centre. Also included are two other buildings in this part of the road: a nineteenth century cottage and (to the rear where it is not in full view) is a hall. It dates from the early eighteenth century when it was ‘an establishment for the education of women’, before the Quakers took it over in 1830. Methodist worship took place until the 1980s, when the church was sold to the local council. By 2002 it was converted into a community music and arts centre, although religious services still take place.
