The Roaring Donkey, Albert Street, Swindon
The pub is conveniently situated for editorial meetings of the local newspaper, the 'Swindon Advertiser' just out of shot to the left. This was not the pub's original name. That was the 'Rising Sun' as I recall. However, everyone called it the Roaring Donkey for reasons to be established and the owners formally adopted it some years ago. On top of the hill on which Old Town sits, the view in the background is of the area north of Swindon.

Pub sign, the Roaring Donkey, Albert Street, Swindon
The origin of the name is unclear but this pub was always known as the Roaring Donkey even though its proper name was the Rising Sun. As far as I know donkeys don't roar so the name may be a reference to the well-known condition of being roaring drunk.

Sw do advertise
Presumably in the Swindon Advertiser, whose offices these are! The Advertiser was founded by a William Morris in 1854 as Britain's first penny newspaper.
