Sculpture, Edgeware Road
The six-metre high structure in Edgeware Road, near the junction with Regent Street was one of two installed in 2011 at a cost of £38,000 as part of the town centre regeneration scheme from Forward Swindon, and was paid for by a grant from central government. The structure was created by Arup and Nicholas Pearson Associates, as part of the Public Realm Renewal project for Regent Street. It is studded with an array of LED lights, programmed with a changing colour sequence, which is linked to aesthetic lighting in the paving in the town centre. The other sculpture is in College Street. In the background is the 19th century brickwork of W. W. Hunter's House Furnishing shop. http://www.flickr.com/photos/swindonlocal/3683878935/

Regent Street art
Shoppers wandering from the car parks to the delights of Regent Street will perhaps notice this piece of artwork here, huddled away in Edgeware Road. Then again, some think they won't: public reception appeared a little lukewarm when it first appeared in 2011 at a cost of £38,000. The artwork is intended to pay homage to the old tramways that used to run here. See Image] for another look.

Art with a twist
The new meets the old: nineteenth century business premises and the twenty-first century artwork in Edgeware Road. The artwork curves and twists to remind viewers of the old tramways of yore. See Image] for another look.

W. W. Hunter
The distinctive style of the shop in Edgeware Road is all that remains of the original Victorian shopping street, close to St Paul's church. William Wallace Hunter left his native East End of London to come to Swindon; by 1891 he had established himself as a furnisher and in 1901 he moved into this newly built shop. It appears that he did very well in the business and helped to create some local streets and buildings, before retiring to Weston-Super-Mare. He died in 1936 but the firm carried on into the Second World War.
