The new place to borrow a page-turner
This is Swindon's new central library in Regent Circus. It opened on 20 October, 2008 at a cost of £10m, on time and on budget. The three storey library offers sixty computer terminals and some 77,000 old-fashioned books. It also boasts a cafe, open courtyard and solar-heated water system. The locally designed library has won a national environmental award from the Building Research Establishment.

Central library, Regent Circus
Seeing this relatively new and quite large building comes as a shock to an aged Swindonian more used to seeing a group of rather tatty and inadequate concrete huts on this site, which served for many decades as the 'temporary' library buildings. Maybe one day the town will get around to restoring its two other eyesores, the Corn Exchange building in the old town and the Mechanics Institute in the railway village.

Rudi's, Regent Circus, Swindon
This is one of a few art deco buildings in Swindon. In a previous life it was occupied by the Islington Furniture Company but has been a trendy wine bar since the early 1990s.
