At the top of the steps seen at Image is this path that leads to Ryeleaze then on into a complex of paths that can head to Potterne Wick, Stert or Devizes. The village of Potterne is 2 miles south of Devizes. It lies astride the A360 road which is the main road to Salisbury and one of the few roads across Salisbury Plain. The Domesday Book of 1086 recorded three landholdings at Potterne, with six mills and a large population of 107 households. Until 2016, Potterne was the headquarters of the Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service.

Church House, number 3 Rookes Lane, was built in 1614. The house was heavily restored in the later 19th century and all the fenestration is from that time. Parish church [5]
There are four entrances to the churchyard. This entrance is from the east of Rookes Lane. The church of St Mary is a beautifully proportioned and complete church in the Early English style. The building is entirely 13th century with the exception of a 14th century porch and a 15th century additional storey to the tower. The church was restored in 1872. There are many items of interest including an Anglo Saxon font from the 9th century and Purbeck Marble columns on the east window.
