Motor dealer, Taplow
Now Stratstone Taplow, a BMW dealer, this site was formerly a Ford main dealer, and until 1949 was Dumb Bell Garage, owned by the photographer's grandparents.

Dumb Bell Garage, Taplow, about 1946
This garage had been run by the submitter's grandfather John Leonard Hawgood since the early 1930s. The photo was taken by the submitter's father John Arkas Hawgood. On the far right are steps up to the flat where the proprietor lived, above the workshop and some lock up garages. The caravans in the photo probably belong to Jenkinson's Caravans who had premises opposite. The garage was on the main Bath Road, the A4. It was open throughout the second world war. Much later it became a main Ford dealer, then a BMW dealer as shown in Image

Old Milestone by the A4, east of Maidenhead
Carved stone post by the A4, in parish of Taplow (South Bucks District), Bath Road; West of Railway bridge, beside petrol station, opposite pub (was Dumb Bell Hotel), on well kept grass verge in front of fence, on South side of road. Bath Road limestone diamond, erected by the Colnbrook, Datchet & Slough turnpike trust in the 18th century.
