West side of Our Lady Of Sorrows, Eton
The Roman Catholic church is in Eton Court, to the west of High Street. It was the wish of Alfred Lord Braye, a Roman Catholic and Old Etonian, that a place of worship should be built for the Roman Catholic students of Eton College and the parishioners of Eton and Datchet. In about 1905, land was purchased by Lord Braye for a church dedicated to Our Lady of Sorrows in reparation for the destruction of the Lady Altar in Eton College during the reign of Edward VI. Despite opposition from the college authorities, the church seen here was built, paid for entirely by Lord Braye. It was dedicated on January 20th 1915. Grade II listed in December 1997.
