Bachelors' Acre
This open space was a playground of the Royal Free School and was given as a park in 1809. It was renovated by a group calling themselves "The Bachelors' of Windsor". Ever since it has been used as a place where the town can celebrate events. It has been considered for development on a number of occasions, but a redoubtable lady, Mrs Doris Mellor, embarked upon a campaign of resistance, taking the case all the way to the House of Lords. She was awarded an MBE for her success. In a reminder of its former use as a school playground there is still a children's play area here, all of course underneath the Heathrow airport flight path.
