War memorial, Horton
The name Horton is derived from two Old English words horu 'dirt' and tun 'settlement, farm, estate', meaning 'farm on muddy soil'. The village occupies low lying land in the flood plain of the Colne Brook and the River Thames so it is not difficult to see how this name might have been appropriate.
