A good example of a cotton mill building, apparently safe from demolition - apart from the interior!

Goyt Mill, Marple - across the Macclesfield Canal
This is a former cotton spinning mill that was driven by a large Carel Freres steam engine driving the mill by ropes. It is long since gone and there is a climbing wall in the rope race. The engine required cold water for it condenser and while a normal mill would require a cooling pond (or lodge), in this case the Macclesfield canal would both supply injection water and receive the hot condensate. This grating with two valves on the wharf side above would be the source of injection water and is more or less opposite the engine house on the other side of the mill.

Goyt Mill, Marple
A large former cotton spinning mill alongside the Macclesfield Canal. It is now in multiple occupancy. Goods were once delivered and taken away via the canal and this glazed hoist mechanism is testament to this former method of transport.
