East Midlands Trains Friday afternoon service, Liverpool - Nottingham, shortly after leaving Stockport
Congestion had eased slightly at Stockport as more passengers had alighted than got on. At Manchester Piccadilly a number of passengers were unable to board this train at all, having to wait half an hour for the next - which would probably have had a similar problem with travellers playing sardines.
Due to the difficulty passengers were experiencing getting on and off, it was half an hour late arriving in Sheffield. That's inevitable when half a dozen passengers have to get off from each doorway, at each stop, to allow others to disembark before getting back on!
Rail travel has increased in popularity faster than capacity has been able to expand to match it. This train is always crowded with commuters travelling the hour from Sheffield to Manchester and back each day. Standing all the way is quite normal.
We had booked seats for this train. What a joke!

Railway towards Stockport
The line from Buxton or Sheffield has just passed under the bridge on Adswood Road. The electrification of the line is between Stockport and Hazel Grove but apparently never used.
