Opened in 1857 by the Stockport, Disley & Whaley Bridge Railway, later to become part of the London & North Western Railway, on what is today the line from Manchester to Buxton.

The Jodrell Arms at Whaley Bridge station
Clearly intended to serve railway passengers, the frontage in 19th century Victorian Jacobean style on the station side is far more ornate than the side facing the main road http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/3995085 . It is a Grade II Listed building but has been unoccupied for several years.
