Torr Vale Mill
Also known as Stafford's Mill, after its 18th century builder. Roof repairs are under way; lights are on upstairs; it's not dead yet.

Torr Vale Mill and railway lines
Looking into the gorge of the River Goyt in New Mills. Torr Vale Mill, built around 1788 by Daniel Stafford, is being re-roofed.At first water-powered, then by steam, the mill closed in 2000, after 200 years of use. On the left is the Millennium Walkway, designed and constructed by Stan Brewster, an engineer employed by Derbyshire County Council; he sadly lost his life in the London bombings on 7 July, 2005.

A first glimpse ...
...from the access pathway to the Torrs, there is the weir on the river Goyt and part of the Millennium Walkway glimpsed through the abundant vegetation.

The Torrs
The Torrs were once a natural bluff around which the river swirled but now show a face that has been shaped by man. The little group assembled here is preparing to start a climb up the rock face. Not a manicured public park but looking at this picture it is not easy to envisage a bustling small town just beyond the trees visible at the top of the cliff.
