Wildes Crossing, Sett Valley Trail
The branch line to Hayfield closed in 1970 and is now maintained as a cycling and horse-riding route, the Sett Valley Trail (seen here passing through the gate in front of the house). Two of the former level crossing houses along the line survive, including this one at Wildes Crossing down a cobbled lane (see foreground) between Birch Vale and Thornsett. Viewpoint approx. Cobbled lane at Wilde's Crossings
The crossing is of the Sett Valley Trail, a 2.5 mile bridleway between New Mills and Hayfield on the trackbed of a former railway branch line which closed in 1970. The route is also part of the Pennine Bridleway.
