Hoffman Bar and Harpur Hill War Memorial
Pub on Burlow Road, previously the Harpur Hill Club. It can trace its history back to a galvanised iron hut erected in 1919 by the Buxton Lime Firms Ltd, when it was known as the Harpur Hill Institute. Following various take-overs and mergers, the local quarry became part of ICI in 1926 and in 1929, the club became the I.C.I. Lime Harpur Hill Recreational Club. An extension was added to the building which then provided a billiard room, bar and a large hall for social events for villagers, the majority of whom worked for ICI. In time the balance of users shifted to non-employees and eventually in 1950 ICI gave up control and it became the Harpur Hill Club. At some point the original buildings were replaced by the current brick structure. In the foreground is Harpur Hill War Memorial (see Image).
