Track to Oxlow Rake

Oxlow Rake
A wooded dry valley much pitted with the humps and bumps of the former lead mining industry.

Woodland at Oxlow Rake
The characteristic humps and bumps of former lead mine surface workings can be seen here. I'd been taking shelter under the trees from a sudden gale which had encroached from the south west turning the sky near black. According to the meteorologists, this weather was a remnant of Hurricane Katia.

Oxlow Rake
One of many "rakes" (lines of pits or mines following shallow veins of ore) in this part of Derbyshire. This one (like Image) is wooded and followed by a right-of-way.

Oxlow Rake
A post-medieval lead mining complex where the extraction and ore processing followed the line of a lead-bearing vein. The site is a scheduled ancient monument.

Old Dam Lane
Looking west towards Peak Forest, with Snels Low to the left. I believe the flowers in the foreground are Sweet Cicely (Myrrhis odorata), which smells strongly of aniseed when crushed.
