Within the last week water had cascaded down the hillside, tearing out a large amount of debris that is now in the canal

Abandoned Engineering
High above the Huddersfield Narrow Canal a classic piece of abandoned engineering. Apparently this was a conveyor to carry coal across from railway sidings to power station. The conveyor would have crossed the canal and the parallel River Tame

St Raphaels Catholic Church, Millbrook - mural 1966
A mural depicting the miracle of the loaves and fishes. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Feeding_the_multitude The position of this mural can be seen in Image, taken at the same time as this, but in Image, taken in 2007, it has been replaced by a geometric design. This church was built in 1958. http://chs.ourmob.org/chs664.php This mural appears to have been painted on tiles rather than fired in as with maiolica. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maiolica In this image, eight years after the church opened, there appear to be bits of the paint flaking off. Clearly it got worse and they abandoned it altogether.

St Raphaels Catholic Church, Millbrook - exterior 1966
Compare this with Image and note the projecting section at first floor level. Here in 1966 it has a mural - Image Progress. My notes written up shortly after taking this photo record it as "Catholic Ch. @ Mossley ?" http://www.flickr.com/photos/rhaworth/5257735308/in/set-72157625440078245/lightbox/ If you had asked me, say ten years after taking this photo, where exactly it was, I would have been very hard put to answer. But in 2010, thanks to the web, I had very little difficulty getting a positive fix.
