Samuel Hill (1864 - 1909)
In front of the welcome sign to Arlies - Springs - Ridge Hill - Hagues Image on Ridge Hill Lane Image is a plaque to local poet Samuel Hill: Samuel Hill (1864 - 1909) The local poet and historian Samuel Hill lived for a time at 78 Hamilton Street, He wrote one of the most important books about Stalybridge, 'Bygone Stalybridge' (published in 1907) and also wrote a poem called 'Ridgehill': "Ridgehill! Ridgehill, in thy praise let me sing, For much I'm indebted to thee..." Stalybridge was famous in the 19th Century for its writers and poets - another was Samuel Laycock (1826 -1893) whose popular poems deplored the plight of mill workers and unemployed people, and who gave his name to the school on Mere Side.
