The top of St Paul's
The top of St Paul's RC church viewed with a zoom from near the end of Hamnett Street. St Paul's Roman Catholic Church was founded on Hamnett Street in 1848, meeting in rooms above a factory. In 1852, Mr Ashton, owner of the Newton Banks Print Works, gave a plot of land off Newton St in Newton Moor, to build a Catholic church. The foundation stone was laid on Friday, 20th May 1853 and the church opened for worship on 21st June 1854. This information is from a 120pp book by Bernard Marshall written in 1998 to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the parish. It is downloadable as a pdf file and contains a wealth of information. http://www.marshallfamily.net/fam/dadsbook.pdf

Commercial Brow
The Railway Image has a large England banner over its gable end. It may well have been taken down now as later that day England lost to Uruguay in the World Cup and effectively knocked out. On the right is St Paul's Roman Catholic Church Image

The Curiosity Shop
Next to the Curiosity Shop on Commercial Brow at the corner with Clarendon Road is a George V postbox which may be one of the oldest postboxes in Hyde. I've been informed that the shop used to be an off-licence with a post office next door, hence the reason the post box is there. As the photo shows the post office has now been converted into a house. On the other side of the post office was a greengrocers.

GR Postbox SK14 23
This postbox outside the Curiosity Shop on Commercial Street Image has a GR royal cipher dating it to the reign of George V. It is possibly the oldest mailbox in Hyde. The plate indicates that the last collection made from the box is at 5.45 pm which is only 15 minutes before the last collection at Hamnett Street sorting office which is at least 5 minutes away in a car and probably 20 minutes on foot. Last collection on Saturdays is at 11 am.
