Salvation Army Fortress
The building of "The Fortress" on Middle Hillgate, commenced in March 1894. Commissioner Bramwell Booth was unable to perform the opening ceremony due to illness and so the building was opened by Commissioner Howard accompanied by Brigadier McAlonen, in Sept 1894. In 2004 work commenced on converting the "Sacred Heart", former catholic church in Cheadle Heath to accommodate the Corps programme. "The Fortress" was sold but the façade of the building, including the foundation stones and Salvation Army lettering cut into sandstone, was conserved in compliance with heritage site planning regulations. It presently consists of fourteen apartments run by the Johnnie Johnson Housing Association.
