This was a once huge complex of 9 acres that dominated the centre of town. This large gritstone block has now been converted to a shopping complex and luxury apartments. The site was originally called Howardtown Mills but seems to have been rebranded following conversion as Howard Town Mills.

Howard Town Mills from High Street East
The conversion work continues. It is not so long ago that this was a working textile mill. The last company to occupy it was called Lux-Lux and manufactured underwear almost exclusively for Marks & Spencer. It did not survive long after the retailer's decision in the mid-late 1990s to abandon its long held policy of sourcing all of its clothing from within the UK - Shame on them!
