Terraced housing in Railway Street
This is or perhaps more accurately, was, real "Coronation Street" territory. I can remember when I used to visit my grandmother here in the 1960's, there were still mills working, and characters who could have stepped right out of the soap opera's set. The blackened walls are or were typical of these northern mill towns, where the soot and other emissions from the mill chimneys turned stone walls black. These houses had very long narrow rear gardens. At the end of each was a little shed, which was an outside privy. Fortunately by the time I visited, there was a toilet inside the house! My grandmother lived in one of these houses. I have to say I can't be sure if I have located this picture in the right part of the street, as there has been a lot of demolition here, and I haven't visited for well over 20 years. But looking at aerial maps I think this bit is still standing, so I feel 90% sure I've got it right.

The War Memorial, Hadfield
The Hadfield war memorial is located on the corner of Station Road and Railway Street, outside the library. It is famous for being shown in the starting credits of the TV comedy show 'League of Gentlemen' (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_League_of_Gentlemen_(comedy) ) The memorial is (almost) identical to that in Glossop (Image]), consisting of a stone monument on a multi-stepped base and topped by a statue of an angel holding a laurel wreath. The metal panels on the base name those residents of Hadfield who lost their lives in the two world wars. The inscriptions are: (on the stone plinth) PRO PATRIA. (on the WWI) panel IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF THE MEN OF HADFIELD WHO IN THE GREAT WAR GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR THEIR COUNTRY. 1914 - 1918. Their name liveth for evermore. and (on the WWII panel) IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF THOSE WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR KING AND COUNTRY IN THE GREAT WORLD WAR 1939 – 1945 The list of names from the panels has been transcribed at http://www.carlscam.com/hadfield/warmem.htm (Carl’s Cam)
