Woodhead Tunnels, west portals 1953
View NE during the construction of the New Woodhead Tunnel, with the twin (single Up and Down) portals of the Old (1850s) Tunnels on the Manchester - Sheffield lines and the original Woodhead station on the left; a locomotive is emerging tender-first on the Down line. On the right is the new double-line tunnel and Woodhead station, not to be opened, electrified, until June 1954 - and destined to be used for a mere 25 years (16 years for passenger servies).

Locomotive (Derailed)
View from bank above and just beyond Woodhead Station, roughly NE. The bogie of a Class B1 4-6-0 that had derailed at the Down-to-Up line crossover is being replaced on the rails while the breakdown crane (from Gorton) lifts the front of the engine. The train was the 08.40 Sheffield - Manchester express; it and all other traffic on this busy route was held up for an hour or two. (At the time all traffic was using the Up (Eastbound) single bore of the Old Tunnel, anyway.)

Valley of River Etherow
The River Etherow flowing in its valley about 1.5 km. below Woodhead Reservoir. It's also below the A628, Woodhead Pass road, a distant fragment of which can be seen at the top left-hand corner of the image above a retaining wall. The stonework of the portal of the 1950's Woodhead Tunnel can be seen too.
