Beam engine in a former shop, Macclesfield
This project had been ongoing for about 15 years but was never to be completed. Mr P Blackshaw was erecting this single cylinder beam engine in a former shop premises that were part of his engineering works. The engine is possibly of 1840s vintage and was used at Macclesfield Steam Saw Mills, last running in 1912 and being removed c1959. Reconstruction started c1978. It is a condensing engine with slide valve cylinder 20" x 36". It was subsequently moved to the National Trust's Styal Mill where it was returned to steaming condition -

Windmill Street, Macclesfield
Originally leading up the hill to the windmill that ground copper ore for smelting in the nearby Charles Roe factory. When the business was moved elsewhere after the death of Roe the mill was converted to more normal usage: grinding corn.
The mill in the picture is one of a number of silk mills still standing in Macclesfield but all are used for different purposes. The River Bollin runs at the foot of the mill on this side and the road bridge over the London mainline is immediately at the photographer's feet.
