Nearing canal bridge, Windmill Street, Macclesfield
The plate on the house wall, right, reads "Court No 3". The OS map of 1871-3 shows it as an access to the rear of terraced houses in Black Road. A notable feature of the map of this area is the extensive mosaic of detached gardens on this steep west-facing hillside, now mostly built on.

WWII Cheshire: Macclesfield roadblock, Macclesfield Canal

Clearly visible today on the approach to the bridge over the Macclesfield Canal are the remains of four sets of concrete sockets to take 8 vertical rails. A defensive measure, the rails were intended to be removable in order to allow authorised traffic over the canal. Part of the Western Command Stop Line No 6.
