The Coopers Arms, Hitchin
The building is essentially of 15c origin. In 1750 it was recorded as being owned by William Lucas of the Hitchin Brewing Family, but there is no evidence that it was licensed at that time. The first recorded license was in 1860, as an ale house. A full license had been obtained by 1910. John Webb, licensee in 1887 ran a horse-drawn taxi to the railway station and hired out cycles, waggonettes, brakes, broughams and landaus. Information obtained from "Hertfordshire Inns & Public Houses", Joliffe & Jones, Hertfordshire Publications, 1995. Frith photographed the building in 1903 from a very similar position: http://www.francisfrith.com/search/england/hertfordshire/hitchin/photos/hitchin_49745.htm

Tilehouse Street, Hitchin
Once a through road, Tilehouse Street is now blocked by the 1980s built Park Way bypass. Given its unpoilt nature, it is no surprise to find that the Tilehouse Street area contains some 40 Grade II listed buildings.
