Building site, Hermitage Road
On this site stood until recently the former Hitchin post and sorting office, not a particularly attractive building, yet important in that when it was built in 1961/1962 it attracted a "great deal of interest from the national and technical press. While providing the facilities required within a strictly functional structure, it was built with a saving about 40% over more traditional methods; the design of the building addressed the problem of how to accommodate the expansion of business and future developments, and paved the way for subsequent post office buildings designed in a strictly functional manner." - quote from the relevant entry in http://www.britishpostofficearchitects.weebly.com.

Hitchin Telephone Exchange (2)
This photo shows the old TE in Queen Street which has been converted into twenty four apartments, the entrance being to the extreme right of the photo. The words THE EXCHANGE can be seen above the entrance doors. It seems quite common nowadays for parts of large TEs to be converted into apartments since there is spare space available following the conversion of these TEs to digital working. The new TE in Hollow Lane is adjacent to the old TE and is to the left of the photo.
