Tudor Half-Timbered Building, Hitchin
One of the fine historic buildings adjoining the market square. A 1902 photograph shows the front elevation fully rendered with the timbers totally hidden. The spire and tower of St Mary's Church are just visible above the building.

Cabbies' shelter, Hitchin Market Place
To be found near the NW corner of the market square. According to a sign attached to it, it was moved here from its original site at Hitchin station. It seems unlikely that any will have survived, but in London similar structures - though perhaps rather larger - used to be a familiar sight near the busier cab-ranks. I think I'm right in saying that some of the largest were in the Brompton Road, not far from Harrods, and that there were others near Victoria station.

"Town Crier" in Hitchin Town Square
In traditional Town Crier style, he was in fact advertising a "BOGOF" offer for a local business. Seems somehow incongruous!
