Building site, Hermitage Road
On this site stood until recently the former Hitchin post and sorting office, not a particularly attractive building, yet important in that when it was built in 1961/1962 it attracted a "great deal of interest from the national and technical press. While providing the facilities required within a strictly functional structure, it was built with a saving about 40% over more traditional methods; the design of the building addressed the problem of how to accommodate the expansion of business and future developments, and paved the way for subsequent post office buildings designed in a strictly functional manner." - quote from the relevant entry in http://www.britishpostofficearchitects.weebly.com.

Hermitage Road, Hitchin
Frederic Seebohm, who owned a large house in Hitchin called the Hermitage, donated some of his land to build Hermitage Road in 1874. The row of shops, including the half-timbered building, dates from the late 1920s and 1930s.
