Rose Cottage Gardens
Rose Cottage was a significant part of Hitchin's past, as it was the home of the widowed wife of Samuel Lucas - a noted Royal Academy Quaker artist, and the Hawkins , an important local family. Despite a strong protest from local residents, approval was given for the house to be demolished in early 2007, to be replaced by houses and apartments on the grounds that it retained little of its original architectural merit. The new development is now virtually complete. The name chosen for the development, no doubt as a sop to local residents, could be viewed more as a slap in the face!

The Albert, Hitchin
On the corner of Walsworth and Dacre Roads, this pub survives whilst some around have closed. The first record of a public house here was in 1869, when it was a beer house known as 'The Early Bird'. It became the 'Prince Albert' and then 'The Albert' in honour of the deceased Prince Consort. [Information Source: Hertfordshire Inns & Public Houses by Graham Joliffe & Arthur Jones]

Walsworth Road, Hitchin
Dacre Road leads off to the right. On the corner is the Albert, formerly the Prince Albert, which describes itself as a 'craft beer and dining room'. The kitchen is in fact a relatively recent addition. Beyond the pub is the delightfully named Hitchin Kitchen Café.
