Straw ridge ornaments, Tempsford
There is a country tradition of placing straw ornaments on top of hay stacks and ricks, with the intention of warding off witches. Pheasants and foxes are the most common creatures to be depicted. Many thatched cottages are also adorned with ornaments on the ridge, and modern thatchers use their imagination to produce a wide variety of scenes. This ridge bears a straw cat poised to pounce on a scurrying straw mouse. Whole cottage: Image
