Arlesey Church End: The Vicar's Inn
This pub is opposite Image.. It used to be called The Steam Engine, and high up in the gable end is a stone plaque with a datestone and a motif that may be associated with this former name. In the 1881 Census the occupants were listed as: William Child, aged 29, a carpenter & beer house keeper, born in Henlow, Beds Eliza Ann Child, his wife, aged 28, a straw plaiter, born in Weston, Herts Emily Elizabeth Child, his daughter, aged 5, born in Arlesey, Beds John Hall, his father-in-law, aged 76, formerly a farm labourer, born in Clothall, Herts Phoebe Hall, his mother-in-law, aged 57, a straw plaiter, born in Clothall, Herts Charles Hall, his brother-in-law, aged 18, a farm labourer, born in Bedford Reading between the lines of this keeping the beer house appears to have been William's secondary occupation, while straw plaiting, as in many rural communities in this area at the time, was a valuable source of income for the ladies of the house.
