Great Expectations
This picture was taken a couple of days before UEFA Euro 2004 football finals started in Portugal.. just after the house had appeared in the National papers. See spot the difference between the front door here and in the 'robbed' version?

Arlesey: 1951 Festival of Britain town sign
To commemorate the 1951 Festival of Britain Bedfordshire County Council erected these signs in every village and small town in the county. On the left is the county's coat of arms while on the right is the Festival logo.

Arlesey: Village hall and pump
Arlesey seems to suffer from a crisis of identity. It has a "Town" Council and a "Village" Hall, best of both worlds presumably. The village pump is, I understand, a replica and not in its original location either.

We wuz robbed.
I understand that this house was painted this way after England lost to Portugal 6-5 on penalties in Euro 2004, in controversial circumstances. Would you choose to live next door?

Arlesey: The High Street
After yesterday's (18 June 2010) utterly dire "Cape of No Hope" performance against Algeria it is to be expected that the owners will have rushed out to invest in several tins of white masonry paint. Nonetheless hope is obviously never lost as evidenced by dedication to the cause since at least Euro 2004 Image

Arlesey: The Women's Institute Hall
The WI will celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2015, having been founded in 1915 with two fundamental aims, both related to the then ongoing First World War, firstly to increase the quantity and improve the quality of food production, and secondly to revitalise rural communities where there was a sudden decrease in the number of men available for working on the land. This is the Arlesey WI hall on the east side of the High Street. The building was gutted in a fire in 1981 but reopened in 1983.
