The inscriptions on the sides you can't see show the distance to Fleet Street, London Bridge and Westminster. In each case it is about 1 mile. The side you can see has an inscription stating it was erected during the 11th year of the reign of King George the 3rd. (MDCCLXXI which converts to 1771 in Arabic numerals)

St.George's Cathedral, Southwark
St.George's Cathedral - the Mother Church of the Archdiocese of Southwark. The original building, opened in 1848, and the first Catholic Cathedral in the UK since the Reformation, was the work of the great Victorian Architect, Pugin. Although much of the Cathedral was badly bombed in 1941 during the Second World War, a great deal of his design remains, and is incorporated into the rebuilt Cathedral, which was re-opened in 1958. http://www.southwark-rc-cathedral.org.uk/cathedral/index.htm
